How Semonemo began
Our Story
It started simply: we wanted classes like this for our own kids. Good teachers, a real curriculum, and an approach that makes sense to Korean parents. We chose online for a reason — wherever you live in the US, or in Korea, good classes should reach your child.
As we built classes, we started to see many more children around us. Kids who had just moved abroad, kids at international schools who were missing something, kids who returned to Korea and found school unfamiliar. Children who didn't quite fit at school or at any academy.
People who shared that view came together: current and former US teachers (including native speakers), native-speaking homeschool teachers, international school teachers, curriculum designers, parent sub-teachers, teachers at Korean schools abroad, teachers in Korea, and Korean students studying abroad. When choosing teachers we had one standard: would we trust this person with our own child?
Today one of the two founders is in Korea, working firsthand with returnee students. With a team standing in both the US and Korea, we can see a child's whole academic journey — from moving abroad to coming home.
Our online-proven curriculum expanded offline into Semonemo Centers, and for Korean reading and essay writing we partner with Moon Kyungwon (moonkyungwon.com). We also launched Semonemo Literacy, a subscription that sends a book and workbook each month.

ROPE for Education
NON-PROFIT
HEyGyO, a community started in 2022 by nine educators abroad, grew into a non-profit organization in October 2023. Educators abroad connected with Semonemo's teachers share information and support each other through seminars, conferences, and meetups. Educators working abroad, those who want to keep teaching abroad after returning home, and those preparing to teach abroad are all welcome.
ROPE × Kids Campus — a project where Semonemo students try being online teachers themselves. Children learn by teaching.
